For I am not Ashamed of the Gospel of God

Romans 1:15-16   So, for my part, I am ready to announce the gospel to you also who are in Rome.  For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one who believes, both to Jew first and to Greek.

Acts 28:30-31 And he remained two whole years in his own rented dwelling and welcomed all those who came to him, Proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness, unhindered.

When it comes to the gospel I thank the Lord for Romans 1:15-16 and Acts 28:30-31 amongst others.  The Apostle Paul’s testimony was that he was not ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of God unto salvation.  What an awesome verse!  But then sometimes there still remains a certain amount of shame to speak of Lord to others?!? Our experience does not seem to match that of Paul.  Well, don’t be discouraged.  Paul used to be a top persecutor and opposer to the church.  If God can transform Paul then he certainly can do the same in us!  Secondly the book of Acts concludes with a great word, UNHINDERED.    He was proclaiming, teaching with all boldness unhindered.  That meant the Lord had a free way on earth through him to do whatever he wanted.  What a pattern!  Pray that the Lord could have a way in you unhindered.  With no barriers between you and him.  Praise the Lord!

The Church: Not a Lifeless Edifice

Ephesians 1:22 And He subjected all things under His feet and gave Him to be Head over all things to the church,

23 Which is His Body, the fullness of the One who fills all in all.

Colossians 2:19 And not holding the Head, out from whom all the Body, being richly supplied and knit together by means of the joints and sinews, grows with the growth of God.

The church is not an organization but an organism.  And any organism has life has it’s characteristic.  What life does the church have?  The life of God!  The eternal life of God! (John 3:16, 1 John 5:11-12).  The church is not some lifeless edifice that you go to once a week made of bricks and stones.  Furthermore Ephesians, Colossians points out that the church is his Body.  The Body of Christ.  But again, our concept is maybe something that is lifeless, in letters and doctrines.  You may think that the “Body” is merely an assembly of believers.  This is true of course, but not adequate.  It says that the “Church which is His Body”.  The difference between the church and the Body is this.  The church meeting begins and must end at a certain point and everyone goes their separate ways.  The Body of Christ never ends!  Because it is something of life, something organic.  How would you like for your heart to take a break for ten minutes?  How about for your lungs to clock out for lunch for about an hour?  Would that be organic?  There is more to be said…

The Christian Meeting

1 Corinthians 1:1 Pursue love, and desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

4 He who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but he who prophesies builds up the church.

5 I desire that you all speak in tongues, but especially that you would prophesy; and greater is he who prophesies than he who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, that the church may receive building up.

Paul focuses in his epistle to the church in Corinth on the matter of prophesying in chapter 14.  He says Purse love,  desire spiritual gifts but especially that you may prophesy.  So the main point is prophesying.  Why does he bring this matter up? Because this is absolutely for the building up of the church!  In verse 4 he says that he who prophesies builds up the church.  Then in verse 5 he says that he desires especially that we would all prophesy speaking of all the believers.  Here we must touch a crucial point.  The church must not have merely hired speakers and the rest of the people lying dormant.  The christian meeting is one of mutuality with all believers speaking for the Lord.  This is what is revealed in 1 Corinthians 14 and what was practiced by the early church.  But here in the pure word of God, it is altogether God’s desire that all of his people speak for him that the church may be built up.  If you’re not convinced stay tuned this week for more on this subject.

Faith comes out of hearing and issuing in Eternal Life

Romans 10:17 So faith comes out of hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ

John 5:24 Truly, truly, I say to you, He who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life, and does not come into judgment but has passed out of death into life.

Praise the Lord for the word. Faith comes out of hearing, and the hearing of the word of Christ.  Hearing the word also enables us to receive the eternal life!

Beware of Unforgiven Offenses

Matthew 6:14 For if you forgive men their offenses, your heavenly Father will forgive you also;

15 But if you do not forgive men their offenses, neither will your Father forgive your offenses.

Matthew 18:21 Then Peter came and said to Him, Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?

22 Jesus said to him, I do not say to you, Up to seven times, but, Up to seventy times seven.

Mark 11:25  And when you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in the heavens may also forgive you your offenses.

26 But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father who is in the heavens forgive your offenses.

Beware of unforgiven offenses.  For whatever we do not forgive men our heavenly Father will not forgive us our own offenses.  This is serious!  We have been forgiven and justified by God already for our sins.  But if we hold onto offenses from others withholding forgiveness from them then we are in trouble.  May the Lord grant us his rich mercy in this matter.

Romans the Gospel of God

Romans 1:1 Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, a called apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,

9 But you are not in the flesh, but in the spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Yet if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not of Him.

10 But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is life because of righteousness.

The entire book of Romans was considered the Gospel of God by the Apostle Paul.  He even said he as a slave of Christ Jesus, a called apostle, was separated unto the gospel of God.  The whole reason for his being called by God and being a slave was altogether for the gospel of God!  Have you ever considered Romans as the gospel?  Paul did.  There is Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and then there is Romans.  Romans is a whole different beast.  For Romans speaks of the Christ who has already been crucified and become the life-giving Spirit (1 Cor. 15:45; Rom. 8:9-10).  Furthermore this “gospel” of Romans speaks of the Christ who as the Spirit  entered into the believers to be their subjective savior.  Wow!  The Spirit dwells within us!  (Rom.8:9).

The Gospel of Grace

Acts 20:24 But I consider my life of no account as if precious to myself, in order that I may finish my course and the ministry which I have received from the Lord Jesus to solemnly testify of the gospel of the grace of God.

The Gospel of grace is centered on the forgiveness of sins, redemption, reconciliation to God and eternal life.  Praise the Lord for the Gospel of grace!
