Prayer and the Ministry of the Word

Acts 6:1-4   And in these days, as the disciples were multiplying in number, a murmuring of the Hellenists against the Hebrews occurred, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily dispensing.

And the twelve called the multitude of the disciples to them and said, It is not fitting for us to forsake the word of God and serve tables.

But brothers, look for seven well-attested men from among you, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint over this need.

But we will continue steadfastly in prayer and in the ministry of the word.

I’ve been impressed with the importance of prayer in relation to so many things.  And here in Acts chapter 6 we see what the early disciples had practiced.  They were first a praying people.  They just didn’t go out and do things randomly without praying first.  Second they were given to the ministry of the word!  How awesome!  But these two go together.  They are inseparable.  Don’t divorce yourself from prayer!  How many people are bold to speak many things in the name of God.  But how much prayer is there before God?  This is the real test.  This is a principle in the bible.  Another sidebar is that they were not alone they were a group.  There is something to be said for praying with others in twos or threes or more.  When we pray together there is more firepower (Matthew 18:19-20).  Their prayer afforded them the divine strength and power needed for the ministry of the word.  So their speaking had impact and surely was the Lord’s speaking.  They were truly the Lord’s continuation on the earth.

How is God revealed?

Matthew 11:27   All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one fully knows the Son except the Father; neither does anyone fully know the Father except the Son and him to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.

Matthew 16:16-17   And Simon Peter answered and said, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.  And Jesus answered and said to him, Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in the heavens.

Most people would agree that God is mysterious.  Yet he doesn’t want to remain a mystery to us.  He wants to be made known.  But how would you suppose that God is made known?  Well, the answer is quite simple.  He reveals himself.  The answer is simple yet profound.  Why?  Because our God is Triune!  That means he is three and one at the same time (search earlier posts or tune in for more details).   He is the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.  You cannot know the Son of God unless the Father reveals him to you.  neither can you know the Father unless the Son reveals him to you.  Awesome huh?  Awesome indeed!  Tune in for more to come….

Those Who Are Sleeping

1 Thessalonians 4:13 But we do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who are sleeping, that you would not grieve even as also the rest who have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so also those who have fallen asleep through Jesus, God will bring with Him.

John 11:11   He said these things, and after this He said to them, Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going that I may wake him out of sleep.

12 The disciples then said to Him, Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.

13 But Jesus had spoken about his death, but they thought that He was speaking about taking rest in sleep.

14 So Jesus then told them plainly, Lazarus has died.

Those who are “sleeping” as pointed out in the verses above, refer to the believers of the Lord who have died.  But the Lord did not say that were dead, he said that they were sleeping.  Meaning that they will be awakened by the Lord at his coming back and will be raised from the dead.  The Lord said the same thing concerning Lazarus.  He referred to Him as one who has fallen asleep.  All of the dead believers will rise first when the Lord Jesus comes back (1Thes. 4:15).

Splendid Salvation

1 Peter 1:2 Chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father in the sanctification of the Spirit unto the obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.

Ephesians 1:4 Even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world to be holy and without blemish before Him in love,

We were chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, and this was unto the obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ.   This is the operation of the Divine Trinity to  bring us into his full salvation.  Have you ever realized that your salvation is carried out, applied by the Trinity?  What kind of God do you have?  Well, the bible definitely reveals that God is triune.  Which means that he is one and three at the same time!  Lol! We were selected by the Father, but this selection is carried out, applied by the Spirit coming to sanctify us.  To separate us unto God from everything else.  This result of this sanctifying is that we repent, believe into Christ and his redemption.  This is the obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ God the Son.  So you have all three involved in bringing sinners into his full salvation. Splendid!

The Raised and Exalted Jesus

Acts 5:29 But Peter and the apostles answered and said, It is necessary to obey God rather than men.

30 The God of our fathers has raised Jesus, whom you slew by hanging Him on a tree.

31 This One God has exalted to His right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.

32 And we are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him.

God has raised Jesus from the dead!  He is  not in the tomb!  He is alive and well!  Men, even religious men, tried to put him away for good.  Philippians 2:8 says that he humbled himself, becoming obedient unto death and that the death of a cross.  Therefore God highly exalted him!  And now he is at highest place in the universe!

Romans the Gospel of God

Romans 1:1 Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, a called apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,

9 But you are not in the flesh, but in the spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Yet if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not of Him.

10 But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is life because of righteousness.

The entire book of Romans was considered the Gospel of God by the Apostle Paul.  He even said he as a slave of Christ Jesus, a called apostle, was separated unto the gospel of God.  The whole reason for his being called by God and being a slave was altogether for the gospel of God!  Have you ever considered Romans as the gospel?  Paul did.  There is Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and then there is Romans.  Romans is a whole different beast.  For Romans speaks of the Christ who has already been crucified and become the life-giving Spirit (1 Cor. 15:45; Rom. 8:9-10).  Furthermore this “gospel” of Romans speaks of the Christ who as the Spirit  entered into the believers to be their subjective savior.  Wow!  The Spirit dwells within us!  (Rom.8:9).

God has called us into His Eternal Glory

Hebrews 2:10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and through whom are all things, in leading many sons into glory, to make the Author of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

1 Peter 5:10 But the God of all grace, He who has called you into His eternal glory in Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little while, will Himself perfect, establish, strengthen, and ground you.

1 Thessalonians 2:12 So that you might walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.

Additional references:  Rom. 3:23, 8:30, Eph. 3:21, Rev. 21:9-10, 11

God has called us into his eternal glory in Christ Jesus!  Here it or anywhere in the bible for that matter does it mention calling us into or going to heaven.  Rather it clearly reveals that we have been called into God’s eternal glory in Christ Jesus. He has called us into his own kingdom and glory.  In Hebrews it even says that he is leading many sons into glory!  Glory is the expression of God himself.  Christians have been duped for centuries thinking that “going to heaven is the destination or goal of the christian life and we just kind of wait around.  This is quite a false teaching and deception.  The goal of our salvation is glorification.  Praise the Lord for his glory and the many sons of God!
